I stumbled across this product while searching youtube one day for "How can I murk jumpers in peoples faces?" Naturally a video with JJ Redick came up, maybe because youtube thinks only white people can shoot or that Redick has really good form. Anyways I clicked on it.
I will have to admit I kinda liked the video. Catchy mainstream music with cool editing and a pro player got my attention. Since I was intrigued I decided to look for more videos introducing this Shotloc device. Come to find out Stephen Curry was also selected to endorse this product. You can't go wrong if Redick and Curry both use this right?
So does the Shotsecret work? Or is it a gimmick?
What I did to test it out was for a few weeks go down to my local park and just practice with it on. At first the device felt very uncomfortable. Make sure when buying it to check out what size you are. On the Shotloc site they have a chart to go by.
My first few shots were actually off by a lot. I was skeptical at the start because of this. But after a few more reps of jump shots I realized why my first few were off. The device was trying to correct the wrong way that I grew up shooting. Just like in the videos I would shoot with my palm. The more shots I took the more I noticed my fingertips were being used way more than before. Once getting the hang of the device my shots began to go in more consistently. I had more accuracy along with more power because I was no longer pushing the ball to go in. I was flicking my wrists while using my finger tips.
So does it work? I will have to say yes. I did some shooting drills from the corners of the foul line. Basically just take 10 shots from each foul line elbow. Without the Shotloc I would make 12 to 13 jump shots out of 20. With the ShotLoc on I would never dip below 15 to 16 each time I did the drill. I saw the video saying you could even use this thing in actual pickup games because it is made of soft foam. Haven't tried that yet but just shooting around with it pre game did give my form a bit of a boost.
